Where it is

Festus, Jefferson County

Festus sits in the south-eastern corner of Jefferson County, sharing a border and most of its everyday geography with Crystal City, a few miles back from the Mississippi off Highway 61 and I-55. It is about ten miles from Hillsboro, which makes it one of the shortest trips on this list.

The ground around here

What the dirt does in this part of the county

The Festus and Crystal City area has an industrial history built on what is under it: this stretch of the county was worked for silica sand and limestone for the best part of a century. That leaves a landscape of old workings, made ground and abrupt changes in what you find below the topsoil — which matters, because the first eighteen inches of a site is where most excavation surprises live.

Above that, the ground is typical of this part of the Ozark border: rolling, clay-heavy, and cut by creeks running east towards the river. Clay soils drain slowly, so the recurring problem is not that water arrives but that it takes days to leave. Older neighbourhoods here were also laid out before modern stormwater practice, which shows up as a lot of properties where the water genuinely has nowhere designed to go.

What gets asked for

The jobs this area tends to need

Around Festus the common calls are yard and driveway regrading, drainage runs through clay-heavy ground, pads for shops, garages and additions, brush and small timber off larger lots towards the county edge, and older sheds and slabs taken out and hauled away.

That describes the ground and the housing stock here, not a list of jobs completed in this town. The work we can show you is on the gallery, and what customers say about it is on the why us page.

Questions

Festus: common questions

Do you cover Festus and Crystal City?
Festus is in Jefferson County, which is one of the two counties this company covers, and it is about ten miles from our Hillsboro base. Crystal City is the same trip. If you are unsure whether your address falls inside the coverage, call and ask.
What if you hit rock or old fill on my property?
It is common in this area and it is exactly what the on-site walk-through is for. Rock near the surface and unexpected made ground both change a job, so the point of looking at the ground before quoting is to find as much of that as possible at the estimate stage rather than halfway through the work.
Can you prep a pad for a shop or garage?
Yes — site prep is one of the five services. Topsoil stripped and stockpiled, subgrade cut to level and compacted, base rock placed to the height your builder or concrete crew wants, and the surrounding ground shaped so water runs away from the build. Pass on their spec before the estimate rather than after.
