Finished ground

Graded footing that sits level end to end, and a drainage run with real fall cut into a wooded slope. Look at the edges and the water — that is where ground work is won or lost.

What to look at

Judge ground work by its edges and its water

A photograph cannot tell you whether a pad was compacted. It can tell you the two things that actually go wrong: whether the surface sits at one level, and whether the water has somewhere to go.

Look down the length of the arena footing and the far end sits at the same height as the near end. Follow the rock line in the drainage run and it has a fall to it and a clean edge against the cut bank, instead of being a decorative strip of gravel on flat ground.

  • One level across a whole surface, not just where the camera is
  • Drainage with real fall and a clean edge against the bank
  • Cut slopes left stable and seeded, not raw and waiting to wash
  • Spoil and debris hauled off, not pushed into a corner
