02 What goes wrong
The three ways ground work goes bad
Almost every bad excavation story is one of three things, and none of them is about how well somebody can run a machine. They are about water, compaction and access — and all three are decided at the estimate, before anything is moved.
Water is the big one. Ground that is graded to look level but falls the wrong way sends water somewhere it did not used to go, which is how a regraded yard becomes a wet basement. Compaction is the invisible one: a pad that was not compacted properly looks identical on the day and cracks the slab two winters later. Access is the expensive one — if a machine cannot reach the work, the price is not about the work any more.
- Where the water goes gets decided on purpose, not as a by-product of levelling
- Subgrade compacted before base rock, because the concrete crew inherits it
- Access worked out at the estimate, so the number does not move on day one
- Spoil and debris hauled off site rather than redistributed around your yard
