Valley Park is a Meramec river town and its geography is organised around that fact. Much of the older city is on low, flat river-bottom ground, and the levee that protects part of it is the single most visible piece of ground work in the area. Flooding history here is well documented and the floodplain is mapped and regulated.
River-bottom ground drains slowly whatever the weather is doing, because it is flat and the water table under it is high. Away from the bottoms the land rises towards Manchester and the wooded hills west of the river, and that ground behaves like the rest of west county — real fall, and water arriving at the bottom of it faster than the flat can take.
