Land clearing, in plain terms

Clearing is the first thing that happens on most properties and the stage that decides what everything after it is going to cost. Until the brush is off, nobody — not you, not us, not a surveyor — can see the shape of the ground, where the water runs, how steep it really is, or what is sitting in it.

The work itself runs from knocking back scrub along a fence line to reclaiming a lot that has not been touched in a decade. Small timber comes out, stumps and root balls come out if they are in the way of what is next, and the material is hauled off rather than pushed into a corner to rot — a brush pile at the back of a lot is a fire risk, a habitat for things you do not want, and an obstacle for the next machine that needs to get past it.

Walk the boundary

What is actually yours, what is staying, and what is in the way. Property lines matter more on this job than on any other — a cleared line is hard to un-clear.

STEP 02

Clear the brush and scrub

The overgrowth comes off first so the ground underneath becomes visible and the rest of the job can be judged honestly.

STEP 03

Timber, stumps and roots

Small timber and any stumps in the way of what comes next, taken out rather than cut flush and left to rot in place.

STEP 04

Haul off and look at the ground

Material off the property, then a look at what has been uncovered — soil, slope and drainage — before anything else is planned.

Land Clearing: common questions

How do you price clearing when you cannot see the ground?
By looking at it in person, which is why the estimate is on site and free. Density, slope, what size the timber is and how far the material has to be hauled are the four things that move the number, and none of them can be judged from a phone call or a satellite image.
Do you take the brush away or burn it?
It gets hauled off site. A burn depends entirely on local rules and conditions and is not something to assume on a property you do not own — hauling is the version that works everywhere and leaves nothing behind.
Can you take out big trees?
The scope here is brush, scrub and small timber. Large or hazardous trees — anything near a structure, a line or a road — is a tree service’s job, sometimes a climber’s. If the walk-through says that is what you have, you will get told to call one rather than get sold something else.
Will clearing change how my property drains?
It can, and that is worth knowing before rather than after. Vegetation slows water down; take it off a slope and the water moves faster and starts to cut. On sloped ground, clearing and a drainage plan are usually the same conversation — which is convenient, because that is the other half of what this company does.
