The ground around here

What the dirt does in this part of the county

Sunset Hills has the Meramec on two sides, and the low ground along it is floodplain with a long, documented history — parts of this stretch of the river have been bought out and returned to open space after repeated flooding. Anything in or near that mapped floodplain carries permitting and sometimes engineering that belongs with the city and the county, not with a website.

Away from the river the land climbs onto the bluffs, and the lots up there are large, wooded and properly sloped. That produces the classic pairing: a fall steep enough to move water fast, and flatter ground below it that has to absorb whatever arrives. Retaining work, bank stabilisation and routing are what that turns into.

What gets asked for

The jobs this area tends to need

Around Sunset Hills the work is retaining and boulder walls, regraded and stabilised banks, drainage runs and swales on the sloped lots, driveway and parking bases, patio and slab subgrade, and clearing on the larger wooded properties.

That describes the ground and the housing stock here, not a list of jobs completed in this town. The work we can show you is on the gallery, and what customers say about it is on the why us page.

Questions

Sunset Hills: common questions

Do you cover Sunset Hills?
Yes. Sunset Hills is in St. Louis County, the second of the two counties this company covers, about twenty-two miles from our Hillsboro base.
My property backs onto the Meramec. Can you work on it?
It depends exactly where you are and what the work is. Floodplain regulation is real and enforced, and fill or grading in a regulated area can require permits and sometimes engineering. Raise it at the walk-through and check with the City of Sunset Hills and St. Louis County before anything is scheduled.
Do you build retaining walls?
Yes — and what makes one stay put is the base it sits on and the drainage behind it, not the stone on the front. Water trapped behind a wall is what pushes it over. Where a wall is high enough or holding back enough that it needs designing, you will be told that.
